Things to Consider with Bathroom Lighting

When thinking about a house's lighting, sometimes the bathroom is the last room to come to mind. However, neglecting bathroom lighting is a significant décor mistake.

The bathroom is increasingly becoming a place to relax. 1 in 4 people spend more than an hour in the bathroom every day. That adds up to more than 2 weeks every year.

Instead of a quick necessary stop, the bathroom is often the place people escape to for a break. 75% of Americans use their cell phones in the bathroom, and 63% use the bathroom to sit and read books, magazines, and newspapers.

With that in mind, you can imagine how important it is that your bathroom is properly lit.

How Do You Choose the Right Lighting for Your Bathroom?

Every bathroom, big or small, needs at least two layers of lighting: ambient lights for overall brightness and task lighting for places such as the vanity and shower.

Ambient Lighting
Ambient lights, or downlights, work as a substitute for natural light. Ambient lighting is usually provided by a central fixture.
A central fixture may not the best way to illuminate your bathroom. To prevent shadows, place the ambient lights on the side of the room instead of a single, centered light or consider multiple can lights with an even spread.

Task Lighting
Vanity lights need to be given extra consideration because the wrong lighting choices can cast shadows over your face. It's important to note that Ambient lights don't substitute for vanity lights and should never be placed above the vanity.
A great option for vanity-light placement is on both sides of the mirror using wall sconces. This will illuminate the face evenly and prevent shadows. However for some, lights on either side of the mirror are impractical, in which case a vanity light is definitely the best option

What Style Will Work For You?

The light fixture you choose will either bring your bathroom design together or tear it apart. Before you buy anything, take a moment to think about the style you want in your bathroom. Consider the other finishes in the bathroom; make sure your choice matches everything else.

Bottom Line

Lighting is important in every room of the house, but the bathroom deserves extra attention in the modern wolrd. The right choices can make a big difference for both the practicality of the space and creating the perfect ambiance.
