Up Your Curb Appeal Through Landscaping

The exterior of a home is the first thing people see, setting the stage for what to expect on the inside. First impressions are important, so why not make the best possible first impression when it comes to your home? Homeowners frequently make the mistake of investing all of their time, money, and energy into polishing and perfecting the inside of their home and wind up with little to no curb appeal. If you're looking to spruce up the outside of your house either for yourself, your guests, or to boost your home's value, read on for some simple and relatively inexpensive ways that landscaping can turn your exterior from bland to grand.

Go Green

The most basic way to add curb appeal is to add more greenery to your yard and exterior of your house. This can be achieved in a variety of ways such as:

  • Planter and window boxes
  • Hanging planters
  • Shrubs and hedges
  • Flower beds and gardens

Finding low maintenance plants will give you the most bang for your buck if you know you won't be diligent about watering and upkeep. Many nurseries can help you find the best plants for your lifestyle, ensuring they bloom beautifully and stay healthy.

Polish, Refine, and Repair

Fixing cracked sidewalks, trampled grassy patches, and trimming overgrown trees and bushes are easy ways to boost your home's curb appeal instantly. Landscaping what you already have will give a more polished look to your exterior and will give you a good idea of what kind of additional landscaping you need to add to achieve your desired look.

Love Your Lawn

Tending to your lawn and ensuring its lush and green can make a world of difference for your home. Plant new grass if necessary, set automatic sprinklers or dedicate a time to water your lawn several times a week, and mow grass frequently to keep it looking its best!

DIY Projects

Adding a tree bench to existing mature trees can give any yard an instant facelift. If a DIY project of that magnitude isn't in the cards, creating brick edging (mulch optional!) around a tree looks equally pleasing to the eye, although isn't as functional. Planting herbs or flowers within the mulch is also an easy landscaping option that can make a previously boring tree the star of the show.

If you're feeling adventurous, another DIY project to tackle is building a pergola and lacing it with ivy or similar greenery. If you have a garage at the front of your home, affixing it there will provide instant curb appeal; if you don't have a garage or don't want to add it in that location, putting it over your walkway or entryway is also an option.

Perfecting Your Pathways

Some pathways can become overgrown with weeds or grass, causing it to get lost and make your yard look sloppy. Trim overgrown greenery for an easy fix on an existing concrete sidewalk or tear out old materials completely, creating new pathways with different materials such as brick or stones. Adding rows of flowers or shrubs around the perimeter can also make your pathways pop! Additionally, creating walkways between different focal points of your yard can easily make your exterior look more put together.

Mix Landscaping Materials

When doing landscaping projects, make sure to mix different materials such as bark, stone, brick, hedges, flowers, and plants, ensuring you aren't overwhelming your exterior with much of the same thing.

Shoot For Symmetry

When landscaping, symmetrical patterns are easier on the eyes and overall more pleasing to look at. If you are adding planter boxes, make sure they are similarly placed on both sides of your walkway or adding shrubs on both sides of your front door or garage instead of just having one. Doing this will help make the outside of your home more appealing.
